Seaway Section

From Chapter 5 of the History of the Seaway Section by Gary Towsley: At the Fall meeting of 1991 Steve Cavior, Chair of the Section announced that the President of the MAA had unveiled a new program of awards for the MAA. These would be awards for distinguished college or university teaching. A section awards committee was formed to act on this announcement. By the Spring meeting of 1992 the Section was ready to award its first Distinguished Teaching Award to Professor Peter Taylor of Queen’s University. In the Fall of 2004 the Section approved naming the teaching award the Clarence F. Stephens Award for Distinguished Teaching, honoring the former chair of the Mathematics department at SUNY Potsdam.

The awardee is honored at the Spring meeting of the Section with a certificate, an invitation to speak, and also becomes the official Section nominee for the MAA Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo Awards for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics. To be eligible for the award the nominee must:

• Be a member of the MAA.
• Be a college or university teacher assigned at least half the time during the academic year to teaching a mathematical science in a public or private college or university (from two-year college teaching through teaching at the Ph.D. level) in the United States or Canada. Those on approved leave (sabbatical or other) during the academic year in which they are nominated qualify if they fulfilled the requirements for the previous year.
• Have at least five years teaching experience in mathematical science.

Any member of the Seaway Section of the MAA may nominate any other member of the Seaway Section for this award. However, self-nomination is not permitted.
