Around 1988, Robert Hofer, now Professor of Mathematics Emeritus at SUNY Plattsburgh, learned about the "Morgan/Potsdam" miracle: Potsdam had become the most successful undergraduate math program in the country under the leadership of Dr. Clarence Stephens. Dr. Hofer was intrigued and inspired by Dr. Stephens' remarkable success. He visited Stephens at Potsdam to learn about his teaching techniques and the philosophy that underpinned the program. That event initiated a long and productive correspondence between these two dedicated teachers. What is archived here is a set of letters in which Stephens (Steve) and Hofer (Rob) discuss teaching principles, ideals, practices, and challenges. We can still learn from their thoughtful correspondence. You will also find some miscellaneous notes and several documents that Dr. Stephens forwarded to Dr. Hofer. The following websites have information about the Morgan/Potsdam Miracle and Dr. Stephens.
