Seaway Section

Has your department hired new faculty recently, or have faculty members in your department been promoted or retired?  Looking for a way to share the exciting news of what's happening in your department?  Submit a Section Note for publication in the next Seaway Current! 

Looking for a way to celebrate the good work of a colleague or share some of the successes of your department?  Write a longer article, called a Seaway Kudo, to share!  

Articles, reports about conferences, and other contributions are welcome, too!  Feel free to get in touch with the editor, Elizabeth Wilcox, by email (elizabeth.wilcox@oswego.edu) to run an idea for something you want to write.  All submissions for publication in the fall edition of the Seaway Current should be sent in by October 2.  

MCCCC36 (a combinatorics conference) will be held Oct. 9-11 at Rochester Institute of Technology; participants are invited to give a contributed talk.  The registration deadline is October 1!  

Each spring, the Section holds section elections at the Business Meeting during the conference.  This year, the position of Two-Year College Representative is up for election. Jesse Clark-Stone (SUNY Canton) is concluding his first term as Two-Year College Representative and has been nominated by the Nominations Committee to serve a second term.  Additional nominations for the position will be accepted on the floor of the Business Meeting and voting for the nominated candidates will occur at the same meeting.  All section members are encouraged to attend the Business Meeting and cast their vote!

The latest edition of the Seaway Current is now available!  Find out what's happening in the Section, catch up on the minutes from the last meeting, and read articles contributed by community members.

Don't forget to register for the Fall Meeting of the section, to be held October 3-4 at St. Lawrence University!  You've missed the deadline to sign up for the banquet or for the lunch, but you can still come to the meeting and bring a bag lunch or head out to the town to pick up your own lunch.  Registration is available online still and you can check out the completed program!

A special edition "Spring Ephemeral" of the MAA Seaway Current has been published and is now available!  Learn about Math & Everything, an event held at St. Lawrence University, in an article by Dan Look and how Brock University's learning centre has been named to honor Eric. R. Muller in an article by Chantal Buteau and Bernard R. We may be deep in the throes of winter, but we have the Spring MAA Seaway Section meeting to look forward to!!  This spring the meeting is hosted by the Department of Math, CS, and Statistics at SUNY Oneonta -- thank you for having us!!  Local organizer Leah Bridgers just finished a term as Chair of the Section. 

Deadlines to keep in mind:

• Abstract Submission: March 7
• Banquet Registration: March 14
• Lunch Registration: March 14

You may still register for the meeting after these dates and onsite when you arrive, but you won't be able to attend the banquet or the lunch if your registration occurs after March 14. 

We'll have several special events, including a Friday afternoon Seaway NExT workshop, and a special session on history of math -- stay tuned for more details on these events and our invited speakers!

The 2025 meeting schedule for the MAA Seaway Section is set! 

Our Spring 2025 meeting will be March 28-29 at SUNY Oneonta.  Thank you to SUNY Oneonta's Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics and local organizer Leah Bridgers for stepping into this quickly upcoming meeting slot!! 

Our Fall 2025 meeting will take place October 3-4 at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY.  Thank you to the Department of Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics at SLU and local organizer Daniel Look!!

If you are interested in hosting a Seaway Section meeting at your institution, be sure to get in touch with the Section Chair, Brad Emmons to find out which meetings still need hosts and perhaps get lined up to host in the upcoming years.  The Section is eager to move the meetings to new locations across the region, so don't be worried if we haven't had a meeting at your institution in recent years.
