Seaway Section

The course "History of Mathematics" is found in the offerings of many departments of mathematics and the course has a very diverse set of actual implementations. We would like to have a virtual conversation about this course and the range of different kinds of offerings, differences in content, pedagogy, and overall goals.

The Seaway Section has nominated Jane Cushman (Buffalo State College) and Jeff Johannes (SUNY Geneseo) for the Seaway Section Representative to the MAA Congress. Now, it's up to you to vote!

Join us for Math Trivia Night on Thursday, November 19th, beginning at 7:00pm. We'll ask some questions. You'll give us some answers. It'll be fun! All are welcome to come. Students are especially encouraged, and are eligible for "huge" cash prizes.

What are some techniques for effectively coordinating groups in remote classes? What techniques from in-person classes translate well to remote classes, and which don't? In this panel discussion, we'll learn some of the techniques that our colleagues have used and discuss how effective those techniques have been. The discussion will take place virtually using Zoom on October 8, 2020 from 4-5 pm.

In the fifth installment of the Seaway Section 2020 Summer Series, panelists Mihail Barbosu (RIT), Maureen Cox (St. Bonaventure University), Brad Emmons (Utica College), and Rebecca Smith (SUNY Brockport) will lead an online discussion on How has COVID-19 changed our academic life? A Conversation on Faculty (Challenges?), Performance and Evaluation.

The Seaway Section of the Mathematical Association of America stands in solidarity with #BlackLivesMatter and with those protesting racial injustice. Racial injustice is not limited to policing. Systemic racism permeates all of our society, and mathematics teaching and research are not immune. We stand united in calling for the systems of racism and oppression to be dismantled. One year is too long, and four centuries is horrifying.

The AMS has organized a Summer Webinar series on Planning to Teach Online. Volker Sorge from the University of Birmingham, UK & MathJax Consortium will discuss ways of authoring, preparing, and teaching accessible web documents containing mathematics, highlighting some of the best practices. Webinar on July 13, 2pm ET.

Each year, the Seaway Section selects a college or university teacher to be honored with the Clarence F. Stephens Teaching Award for Distinguished Teaching of Mathematics.

The Seaway Section is pleased to announce that Xiao Xiao from Utica College has been awarded the 2020 Clarence Stephens Award for Teaching Excellence.

Dr. Alan Taylor of Union College is this year's winner of the Clarence Stephen's Distinguished Teaching Award.

The Seaway Section of the MAA is proud to announce that Morris Orzech of Queen's University is the winner of The Clarence Stephens Award for Distinguished College or University Teaching of Mathematics for 2006.
