Friday Afternoon Workshop - Tangible Calculus: Making Models and Manipulatives in a Makerspace
    Speaker:
    Gabriel Dorfsman-Hopkins (St. Lawrence University)
    Abstract

We will explore a workflow to produce custom models of surfaces to be used in the calculus classroom. This will involve designing and 3D printing a mold and then using that to “mass produce” clear models of surfaces with a vacuum former. We’ll also give a few examples of worksheets and activities that could accompany these models and spend some time brainstorming more activities as a group.

Friday – Oct 3

    7:30 pm – 8:30 pm
    Title:
Banquet Invited Lecture - Curved-Space Pool Hall
    Speaker:
    Jeff Weeks
    Abstract

After a quick introduction to 2D spherical, Euclidean and hyperbolic geometry using fleece surfaces, volunteers will don a VR headset to shoot some pool in the corresponding 3D spaces, with the rest of the audience following along on the room’s main screen. Our volunteers will report the surprising optical effects they observe, which we'll explain using 2D models. It turns out that while people's perceptions of non-Euclidean space depend mostly on the geometry of the space itself, our brains' previous experiences also affect what we "see". Note: On Saturday, you can try VR Curved-Space Pool for yourself during the afternoon parallel sessions (and — for students only! — during the morning Business Meeting).

  2. Time:
    8:30 pm – 10:00 pm

    Title:
MAA AWM Lecture - Quantitative Justice: Using Math to Change the World
    Speaker:
Dr. Ranthony A. Clark (Duke University)
    Abstract

Quantitative Justice research comprises the mathematical, computational, and statistical investigation of real world problems related to social inequity. In this context, mathematical tools can be used to quantify notions of ‘fairness’ in a given domain, generating both new mathematics and impacting society at large. In this talk we will introduce this emergent field of interdisciplinary research. In particular, we will use computational redistricting as a motivating example to show how math like statistics, metric geometry, and topological data analysis is being used to shift societal systems.

    Abstract

The Greater Upstate New York Inquiry-Based Learning Consortium is a group of instructors at institutions throughout the Seaway Section that organizes events and activities designed to promote and improve inquiry-based teaching and learning. We invite you to give an unscripted, 5-minute talk about what’s happening in your classroom. Are you doing something cool in the classroom with regards to active learning? Do you have questions you’d like to pose to others? This session is an opportunity to take a peek into what others are doing and give others a peek into what you’re doing. In addition, we want to hear from you about what future events we should plan. If you are interested in teaching and learning by inquiry, active learning, project-based learning, or other student-driven forms of teaching, please share your vision of the future of GUNYIBL. Feel free to come and go throughout the session, as needed.
